Subject: Other factors.

Last year we had a yield reduction on the ground we didn't bale. Seems our straw chopping was not up to speed for the conditions. Figure it cost us about 6bu per ac. of beans at 6.00 for 36.00 in profit down the drain. I could go to a stripper header but don't have the area needed to support two heads. We usually bale all the straw in small squares. When barns run out or the crew appears to be on the verge of revolt, we chop the rest. This year we called in the round baler and removed the rest in rolls. Maybe sell them, maybe not. But given the cost of baling plus the fert. lost it should still return positive dollars. If we sell the straw rolls it will be very profitable.

Weed control in DC beans can get out of hand due to poor stands.

So here, given a choice of chopping or baling I will take baling even if the straw can't be sold. But we plant very thick wheat stands here. Other places may be able to get away with chopping.

Tim
