We all make fun of those guys, but you may be right. Their cattle aren't very pretty but they reproduce.
To answer the question, I would say keep the cow working for you as much as possible. Avoid machinery and fuel. Buy fence before buying a feed wagon. Any kind of processed feed is expensive. Good cow herds are culled, not built.
