Thats a pretty loaded question and the obvious answer is it depends. Have heard of some in the low 6 lbs of dry matter per lb of gain from 250 to finish. If you start them in the 300 to 500 lb range no need to go to 1500 lb range. You can get them to grade at 1300-1400 lb pay wt. The lbs from 1100 to 1500 are very expensive at high priced feed.

Some will say the only way to feed a holstein is with a steer stuffer and corn. But, it can be done with a lot of different ingredients just depends on your set up. Energy does need to be a bigger part of the ration longer than black cattle.
