Faunsdale, AL | If you're going to put the calf through the dehorning, might as well do it properly. No way a hedge trmmer is going to get the horn. Use a set of Barnes dehorners or an electric.
I don't think those are too big for a larger electric. Problem with electrics is when you have to do a lot of them and the iron gets cool and can't keep up. With the electric/hot iron, you are killing the tissue at the base of the horn under the first 1/4=3/8" of hair. If there is a scur after using an electric/hot iron dehorner, it will be a compact small horn that can be easily taken off later with a Barnes. If you use a hedge trimmer or a too small barnes or use it improperly and miss some horn tissue around the base, it will grow back in a flat line of horn that is very hard to remove completely except by surgery. | |
