We had Windstar minivans when the kids were around, but all 3 are gone now. So, in January we traded for a Ford Flex and like it more than I ever did the minivan. Plenty of room and decent gas mileage, 22-24 and my wife is always taking it to SW Minnesota.
A Flex might be a good compromise vehicle for you. I guarantee you will still get some funny looks, but the looks do grow on people.
