E.Central MN | There is a coop at Renville MN that uses excess heat from the sugar beet plant to heat the water for tilapia. They almost went in the tank for a couple of years, but found their marketing niche and are doing ok I think. When they started out they had the fish processed and sold frozen filets. Now they ship their fish live in tankers to markets out east and Canada where there are a lot of immigrant asian buyers that want to buy fish live. Wish they sold their fish as filets locally, only foreign grown tilapia in the stores although they are being grown 50 miles away. Some fish growers down south were having problems with high levels of toxic metals because of the fish food and excrement. | |
