Subject: Re: Three phase in the morning

Wi
We have 480 3 phase. Being a dairy farm we have a lot of pumps and motors running. Just like grain operations have plenty of electric stuff for moving grain around.

We actually switched when the power company offered to do it for free. We wanted to go to 3 phase but was going to cost $60,000 just to get it to our farm. Then the power company decided they were going to bring it to us for free as they wanted us on it.

It was a big conversion process as we ran also dropped all of our wires underground at the same time. We have a transformer in the barn, shop and one out by the panel that feeds the commodity shed and house. The calf facility has its own meter and transformer.

Now that it is in though, it makes a lot of things nicer. I had been pricing some ventilation equipment for the shop and one I told him we had 480v 3 phase his eyes lit up and said the possibilities were endless. Which they are, its nice because you can buy a lot of things at industrial auctions and you'll be able to find some way to wire them up in your shop. Got a plasma cutter very cheap from a guy because it was setup for 480v 3phase and he could not use it. It was an early hypertherm 600 that was not convertible. Also made it easier to have a long cord for it due to the lower amperage draw.

For us it was a decent amount of work to switch, but its better to do it sooner than later.
