I remember well when my uncle went through the same thing as your son is, and also my aunt, each losing a child (though older) to similar circumstances.  There are no words that can bring comfort, just be present when they need you there, be ready to cry when they cry, be quiet when they want you to be quiet, speak when they want you to speak.  And pray always.
