| With p. herefords breeding 15 month heifers to calve as two year olds with pelvic measurments above 150 sqcm you definitely want a 2.2 or above calving ease direct and a negative birth weight epd. Sandhill confuses everyone including themselves becasue they dont have a CED epd.. but list CEZ$ and a "calving ease score". They say in the front of the book that a one means no assistance, a two means assistance, and three means mechanical assistance, but then have some bulls listed as 5's, which makes no sense! Just that a higher calving ease score is worse is confusing. Also, in my opinion, CEZ$ is not an accurate indicator for heifer bull selection yet, but if I was going to use it would want a 20 plus... but at sandhill i dont know. Take for example lot 42. He is one of the bulls they have listed as having a 5 calving ease score, and he has a 4.1 heifer killing birth weight epd, but has a pretty decent 18 CEZ$. I looked through the whole catalog and cant tell what would be a heifer bull from one that would be the worst to use on first timers. For my money, Id find some Legend sons somewhere and sleep better at night. | |
