Another thing to think about that wasn't mentioned is available subsoil moisture. Alfalfa is a high water use crop. Not sure of your location but if your subsoil moisture was all used up in last years drought and hasn't been recharged you will have trouble getting a stand to perform like one that is seeded after a year or two with lower water use crops.
