dakotadirt - 3/23/2013 12:58 freshening up the wear items on the base planter will be more profitable than neglecting those parts and spending money on gadgets. Yes, indeed. Having the openers performing well is Job #1. Next is the meters. Fancy monitoring is useless unless you understand how the seeds need to go into the soil for best emergence and vigor. I'm continually amazed at some fairly sophisticated farmers who really don't check their seed depth, nor understand why it is where it is. Automatic down-force can be a great investment if you plant into damp clay soils, but only if the system measures and adjusts every row (especially in no-till), and only if the downforce-adjust response time is rapid. (I'm sure this remark leaves it wide open to Jim at Dawn to tout their system; let's see if he can restrain himself, heh, heh.) |
