Subject: RE: oats for 2013

NE Iowa
Haven't grown oats in about 5 years. Not sure where you are at but the farther north you are the easier it is to get high test weight oats. I'm in NE Iowa and Quaker in Cedar Rapids is the big buyer of milling oats around here. A lot of their oats is coming from Canada now because there is a bettter supply of high test weight oats. Last time I sold to a mill they docked for anything under 36#. I would typically only have oats that good 3 out of 10 years. Vary weather, or should I say temperature, dependent. 32-34# was common for us. Plant as early as you can. Oats germinates at like 34 degrees so if the ground isn't froze get them planted.
