The main thing to consider is the form of the fert. If it is potassium phosphate then you are on the right track. Most pure ortho products are pure because they are reacted to make the potassium phosphate, and the ratios have to be correct to get a homogenized product. That is the big thing to look at. 10-34-0 will tie up immediately in the soil before enzymes can break it down. With potassium phosphate this is greatly reduced making the phosphorous much more available since it is bonded to potassium. A potassium phosphate molecule carries a positive charge so it sticks to negatively charged soil colloids and does not leach out of the soil like 10-34-0 or other products that are not in that form. Many products begin with 10-34-0 and mix KCl in with it and simply water it down to keep it in suspension, this is not what you want. Also be careful about these micro packs they "add" for you and include in the price. That is usually a sign of a by product that is now going on your soil and could potentially damage soil life and germ. Ammonia can also be a problem in wet conditions.
