Do you do any work in the shorter season areas, we have about 120 frost free days, and about 2200 Corn Heat Units average. We grow certified organic alfalfa, vegetables, dry beans (pintos), and winter and spring cereals, and often a fallow year in a wing-it rotation. (The alfalfa and veggies mess up the rotation).
What do you suggest as far as cover-cropping in short season areas? We grow winter wheat behind the pinto beans usually, but it is tight to try to get it in and up before winter sets in. Every year or two we try to fallow one field, which has meant letting the volunteer winterwheat grow after harvest, into the next June and turning it in.
Any ideas would be appreciated,
