Subject: Cover crops in oats?

SW Minnesota
I raise about 60-65 acres of oats every year as a cash crop (straw too). I have been thinking about different cover crops that I could possibly seed with the oats and the cover crop would be there to "take off" after the oats is harvested. I live in SW Minnesota so there are limitations to what I can do because of the climate. Would crimson clover work for this? I see it is a clover that is not frost tolerant (which I want anyway) but because of this, is it too early to seed this with the oats, which is planted sometime in April? Any other crop suggestions?

Many years the oats itself regrows its own "cover crop" from the light oats that gets blown out the back of the combine, but this is mostly directly behind the combine in a strip the width of the combine separator. I would like to have something more substantial. Any insight or thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
