Subject: Re: May 10th cover crop deadline

East Central Iowa
The hubby and I talked about this just last night! I was under the impression that you could insure the soybeans, regardless of cover crop removal date, as long as the cover crop didn't head out. A neighbor had an insurance guy stop out on the farm and check his ryelage for grain since he didn't chop until the 18th. Apparently as long as there was no grain in the ryelage he could insure his second crop fully. Has this changed in the last year? Seems kind of foolish. It makes cover crops as a forage source a bigger risk. If you plant it in the fall, will you get enough tonnage off of it by May 1st to make it a good investment or not? Might scare some people away from cover crops, which is too bad imo.
