Subject: Re: Using straw to suppress weeds

Southeastern Alberta
I use flax straw in my shelterbelts to keep the weeds down and keep moisture from evaporating. The ground is wet under there for weeks after a rain, and it is pretty good at weed suppression. The thicker the better. I usually spray the weeds 2 or 3 times a year. It keeps from pruning the roots of shallow rooted trees with tillage.
