MN21 - 3/5/2013 23:31 Wondering what your guy's thoughts were on innoculating droughthy ground from last year that still holds high levels of nitrogen. If it's testing 70-100 units of N do you find it necessary to inoculate?

The extra N will help the soybeans get off to a great early start, but they will run out before they need the biggest amount.  Soybeans need 5.5 pounds of nitrogen per bushel.  50 bushel soybeans will need a total of 275 pounds.  70 bushel beans need 385 pounds.

Early applications of N (or carryover N from last year) will delay nodulation.  However they will try to nodulate when the N is used up and therefore will need sufficient numbers of rhizobia present at that time.  We already know that the heat and drought from last summer killed large numbers of rhizobia in the soil. We could still get large rains this spring prior to planting that would leach N deep into the soil profile.  So there are several factors to consider.
