Southern Saskatchewan | If you can sustain the downturn that is definately the time to expand. When BSE hit us we culled light and expanded the factory. Little by little we added more heifers and by the time the market took a turn we were in good shape for numbers. Waited at least another year to cull hard and all worked out. There were others that sold everything and got back in when it turned and started to be a moneymaker again. I just don't pencil that move out. Sell when they are worth nothing,buy when they are expensive and you're really in bad shape because they no doubt bought those cows originally when prices were high. Thats what makes us longhaulers money! Our situation relied on the farmland to turn the profit when BSE hit so just a cattle guy may have a different outlook. We slashed expenses and fed straw and range pellets with grain. Went though very little hay. The kicker is having enough pasture which I'm sure I don't have to explain. If it is a possiblity expand the factory! | |
