Subject: RE: Feeding advise, worthwhile?

Eastern Kansas
I did this exact same thing when I was first starting out. Kept all my Fall heifers through the summer in the lot, gave them free chioce good hay and a couple lbs of ddgs a day. I lost my ass on them. They would have sold in the spring for about 1.40 weighing 400lbs. They got big ol' hay bellies on em (I've also wondered if that couldn't also be attributed to the straight ddgs.) Anyway, I sold them in the fall, they weighed about 550 (so they didn't gain very well), and they sold for .80 cents. Not kidding. I was never so pissed after picking up my check. But it was my fault. Poor management on my part.

I have never been able to get my fall calves to gain very well after I pull them off the cow. So now I just sell them right at weaning.
