Northern New York | We are fairly certain we will be depopulating/repopulating, and as we are a small operation my vet is suggesting we look at 100% AI, both to minimize disease pressure and to eliminate the cost of purchased boar(s). We did use AI quite a bit in the 90's but moved away from it to natural service ( both hand mated and some pen mating) . When we were AIing we had very good results but we did have a boar on the farm for stimulation , heat checking, and clean up servicing. Do you think AI can work without a boar on the farm? Would Matrix be a good option to syncronize gilts? Any of you use it? Also, is boar semen still shipped fresh, or is some sold frozen? Back when we were doing AI almost all semen was shipped fresh as at that time freezing was not really perfected yet. Thanks for your thoughts/ comments. Jeff | |
