N E Illinois
It makes a big difference where you are at. I am in NE Il. I push the wheat to much it order for a companion crop to survive and prosper well. I use herbicide on the wheat if necessary. It may hurt what you frost seed. A companion crop will limit the herbicide selection that can select from. I also put nitrogen on the 2 or 3 times during the growing season. If I push the wheat enough a small portion will go down. Those area will smother a companion crop out. I then know I have enough N on the wheat to maximize grain production.
I attempt to plant by Aug 15. I will use cereal rye, forage oats, turnips,& tillage radishes. Could add annual ryegrass& Crimson clover. The more species you use the better chance of success. Add 50 # of N when you plant. I no til and try to apply N. just before a rain.
