For me it's two things:

1) Them getting frozen-in and then what I do next

2) Dropping a silage bale into one without perfect depth-perception.

I've never had one rust out before, but my oldest one is only about 10 years old :)

I just buy the cheapest ones around and then when I break one, it's usually only 1 of the 3 pieces so I usually have between 1 and 2 spare sections laying around to fix it. I wouldn't buy a stainless steel one because I wouldn't be able to allow myself abuse it.
