Subject: Feeding whey to dairy cows

Central Kansas
I have a small cheese plant on my dairy farm. I would like to feed whey to the cows, but I tried it once and had so many problems I finally decided it wasn't worth it. I want to try it again. I make cheese usually 3 days in a row, then don't make cheese for 4 days. I would get about 4000 lbs/480 gallons of whey per cheese batch. I milk about 120 cows.
My questions are how do you dairymen do it. What kind of tank do you store it in? Do you keep it from getting sour in the summer? How long does it stay good feed? By searching past posts, I got the idea about using submersible pump to keep the pump from freezing in winter, which sounds like great idea. My problem is I am from Kansas, and there are so few cheese plants I'm not sure if there is any farm in Kansas feeding whey, so I can't just go look at my neighbor's farm to see how he does it. Thanks for your help!!
