Subject: RE: Raising a few hogs for slaughter

I raise 6-12 per year. 2-3 would be more fun, but I usually have to buy 1 or 2 litters and drive an hour and a half just to buy any weanling pigs these days.

Is it worth messing with? Not really, unless you like pigs. It sure isn't worth it if you're buying pre-made pellets or even $7+ corn, though. If you can find cheap feed and healthy piglets it's probably worth it.

I'm feeding mine expired bread, insect infested 2010 corn, garden overflow, wet brewers grain, protein concentrate mixed in with the ground corn, and kitchen waste. NOTE: it's illegal to feed kitchen waste to them unless it's "waste from ordinary household operations which is fed directly to swine on the same premises where such household is located." Anyway as long as I count my time as a leisure activity and none of them die, I MIGHT make money on them :)

The only thing that makes it really worthwhile is the home-raised pork. To me, it doesn't even seem like the same species of pork chop that Wal-Mart sells.
