West Salem, Illinois | I worked all summer bailing hay and doing field work for Grandpa and he let me pick out a "muley" heifer off the lot after the calves were all weaned. So I picked out a heifer and was trying to break her to lead, if you had a halter on her she was fine, if you took the halter off and were still in the pen she would stomp your guts in! I bred her and got the first calf out of her and she milked like a holstein, so Grandpa had an orphaned calf and I tried to put it on her. Same thing if you thru a rope over her head she was fine and stand like a champ and let both calves milk, if you didn't she would try to stomp that calf to death. So till the calves were old enough to wean I went out three times a day and roped that cow so that she would let both calves nurse. One good thing I did get pretty decent at roping from the fence after awhile!! | |
