Central Texas
I buy the older bred cows for myself. Can be run on a seasonal basis if needed. Selling just before football season is a good time to sell slaughter cows before the big fall runs (and cheaper prices) begin. Lots of flexibility with these "last calf heifers". Also they are easy to deal with as you don't get to be an old bred cow if you didn't adequately do your job as a younger cow. No need for a bull or worry about getting them bred back. Would recommend having some carryover stockpiled grass (possibly in the timber?) in order to buy these cows 30-60 days before green grass in the spring. The cows should be cheaper early and you can have a bigger calf to sell around labor day. Need to avoid crazies, cancer eyes, balloon teats and cripples.

Just another 2 cents worth.
