| Nothing I'd do myself, but I can see the reasoning behind this. Through IVF, this guy will be getting tons of embryos from those 5 straws of semen. The polled gene is becoming a money maker in the Holstein breed. Whether you are a genomics skeptic or not, having exclusive use of the top homozygous polled Holstein young sire is going to pay dividends.
I've got a few bulls from Dairybulls Online (the company that this originated with) in my tank. Outside of crossbreeding, I have a few Holstein families I'm keeping pure and I'm going polled on them (Relief P is the bull, not quite $10,000/unit but $60). I'll use another of their bulls, Eliminator P on some crossbreds, as I've got some polled coming through my herd now via Jersey and Norwegian Red breeds, so I could make some homozygous polled crossbreds if I use polled Holstein in the rotation.
Nice that polled is a dominant trait. | |
