Subject: Water softener in garage

The post below from Dennis SEND in the button up house thread got me thinking about our house. Garage is heated, but not enough to keep water softener out there. Could the softener be in the basement and the salt tank in the garage. If it did freeze, very little water in it and plastic would probably expand enough not to hurt.
Or does the tank need to be below the softener control head?
If that is possible it would sure make the salt a lot less of a chore
