Driftless SW Wisconsin

With the warmer than usual late Nov weather and no snow yet mine are still grazing whatever they can find and that is helping to stretch the hay. We will probably have snow put an end to that, although the forecast looks "sunny" and no precip for about as far out as predictions make sense to go.

It does seem that with corn seed prices and other input costs what they are that some marginal/near HEL ground that has had corn on it the past year or two might be more profitable in hay at these prices or grass for grazing.

Many of these folks growing this corn though may not have cattle or fences and just use the hay as a cash crop at these prices as IH1086 describes. Probably requires you already have the baler etc.

But who knows, maybe a window of opportunity for some enterprising young guys (as in a recent thread here) to go around and custom cut/rake/bale odd patches, waterways, converted <100 bu corn fields that at these hay prices might now be profitable to manage for hay.
