Subject: RE: How to Remove Small Trees from Field?

I did about 200 that size in a day last spring when the ground was still soft. Big heavy rear blade facing rearward with a loop of chain on it, I'd push them over backwards, the 3"-5" ones would uproot cleanly and stay over, I'd drive forward then drop the blade to hook the root ball and peel the roots on the opposite side back out of the ground.

The small ones I just had my helper wrap a chain around groups of 3-5 of them and I'd pull them out, we dropped them in lines. Square link chain works better for this as it won't slide up the trunk.

We use a set of pallet forks and drove at 90 deg to the pull direction, scooped up 10-30 stems to pile up. Once you get 5 or so on they didn't need to be perfectly aligned at the balance point.

I learned once you dump it you can't pick it up again with pallet forks, just makes a mess so pick the location wisely.
