The ratio is important when you get down to the low end like 1:1 or 1.5 to 1 etc. You want an excess of calcuim over phosphorus to avoid brittle or soft bones. The main thing that's important is the amount they are consuming. You probably could use another mineral which would likely cost more per ton, but would use less since you are getting a lot of calcium from the alfalfa. Calcium is about the cheapest part of a mineral package.
