Airport runways are named according to the points on a compass.  We have a runway 9-27 that seems to run east to west, and a 17-35 that runs at an angle, crossing 9-27, from Southeast to Northwest.  This has confused me, as I also assumed 0 would be north.  Remember, however, there is magnetic norths and true north, but aren't most compasses compensated for that?
