Subject: frost seeding a spring cereal

SEON
I've never grown a spring cereal before. They tell us around here there is a big yield drag vs fall cereals but that can be minimized somewhat by planting early, early, early.

I just took out some fence rows between the hay fields a week ago. It's pretty late to be planting fall wheat and I thought I might try some spring barley...possibly underseeded with alfalfa. I'm wondering if I should get it ready to plant now so I can frost seed with the drill in the spring without any spring tillage to delay me?

I don't expect wind or water erosion over the winter will be an issue.
