| My understanding is that wet grain won't spoil in bags because bags have a large surface area to volume ratio which keeps the grain cool and cool grain won't spoil. The grain temp in a bag will follow the average temp for the past week or two.
We had a bag of 18% corn that we hauled out in July 2011 and had a few loads docked a few cents for a musty odor. I don't think the musty odor was from the 18% corn, but from the little bit of wet corn in the bottom of the bag from all the water sitting around the bag. The bags are not air/water tight because ther ends are not sealed, just pinched shut with 2x4's, also mice will chew small holes on the bottom. We were even wetter here in W ND than you in early 2011, 8"-9" of rain in the month of May alone. The spot I picked is normally dry, even a few cactus, but 2011 was the wettest year since before 1940 (according to the oldest old-timers I talked to). | |
