EC Indiana | Yea but the mulch provided by the cover would have helped conserve some moisture as well if they killed it early enough. Also, I hate to hear anybody talking about putting on N with a cover crop, we are trying to scavenge nutrients with these cover crops, not really grow big radishes if that makes sense. I understand they may get a little bit bigger and put a little more bimass on the surface as well as roots but I think most guys unless they feel comfortable reducing their spring rates by what they applied in the fall that they could actually be contributing to more N leaching. If a big rain comes before the crop gets started then N is already outrunning the root system to the tile or the aquifer. We are not growing "State Fair" radishes, rather catching nutrients that we have already applied. | |
