Earlville, NY | We feed liquid whey, doesn't get as thick as molasses. We fill five loads a day using an electric submersible sewage pump, 2HP 220V stainless steel. (The whey dissolved a cast-iron pump pretty fast) It will move about 500lbs per minute. Ours is in a 5000 gal vertical tank inside freestall barn, whey never gets frozen inside the tank. The whey gets pumped up a hose out the top of tank into a pipe that goes out side of barn; we drive the mixer under it and pump away. Also have a remote controlled on/off switch to start pump from tractor. When you shut it off the whey just drains back down hose into tank; no worries about freezing.
We do have a 6hp 3" gas powered trash pump to empty the trailer when they bring load every 4 days. With that you have to be sure to to drain it and drain hose every time in winter; you definitely don't want to have to start that several times a day. We use PVC pipe to fill tank from the top; used to fill through the bottom valve put a heck of a load on pump as the tank got more full. | |
