It's not about saving money, it's about not getting blood all over the trap which will deter future catches. How is drowning any worse than a bullet? Drowning they are out in less than a minute. Bullets likely several minutes of pain before death.
Blood in the trap doesn't matter. Coons will still come in to the havahart trap. I use marshmallows for bait. A 22 in the head and it's over fast.
