| I wouldn't use a grade 8 bolt as a shear bolt. Because of the hardness they will snap quicker when force is applied sideways than a grade 5 which will deflect slightly sideways before breaking Grade 8 gives it's maximum strength lengthways
Archery Dog, make sure you are using a bolt who's shoulder sticks completely thru the auger tube. The threads are the weakest point on a bolt & if any are in the area where the torque is being applied it will shear quicker. AS others have said, check the end bearings and be sure the flighting isn't dragging against the tube somewhere. WE ran into a similliar problem a few years ago with shearing pto bolts on a new auger. It would shear several bolts unloading a truck load and even when running empty. Finally found that a mounting bracket was welded in wrong allowing the swing auger to rub the tube. Replaced the swing auger with a different one & have only sheared 1 or 2 bolts in 3 yrs.
