well with the wire removed it still reads 8 volts. is ths correct? and if so why wont the alternator excite with out manually shorting it? I thought it read 8 volts while connected to the alternator as well but not sure. Nippendiso brand alt.




Something is wrong if the "L" wire still reads only 8V with no load on it. It is pretty common for that wire to fail.
JD sells a repair kit to fix it.
If that wire has failed, you will have erratic or no charge from the alternator.

With the tractor running at 1500 rpm, use a jumper wire to momentarily connect the big BAT stud on the alt, to the L terminal in the regulator plug. If this momentary jumper makes the alt charge, good chance your "L" resistor wire has failed.

Had to replace it on my 4450 a few years ago for the same reason.
