Calcium Chloride for crisp pickles. Ball sells it as "Pickle Crisp" after one heck of an outcry by canners when they discontinued it. Same stuff major packers use. If you're hot-canning, you will want it. Recipe-wise, I suggest the above, substituting alum for Pickle Crisp.
Fermented or Fridge Pickles are a totally different story.
