Southern Alberta Canada | A hopper trailer is unibody design and corrosion is an issue. They have lots of nooks and crannies that dirt, salt and minerals can get into and rust out members and such. Also after they've been patched a few places they don't clean out very good and the slides can be a real pain. As far as the truck is concerned it has a small body (hood and cab), the rest is heavier steel and cast so body repairs become a much smaller issue. A twenty year old and five year old truck in decent shape have about the same chances of mechanical failure. If you can find a nice truck in the ten year old range for a good price then you can afford to repower it if the engine fails and still be within a decent price. You start patching up a trailer or rebuilding it it will cost you a fortune, rebuilding hopper trailers is dirty time consuming work espesually if you want a decent looking unit. The running gear, landing gear and fifth wheel plate on a trailer are relitively cheap to fix. | |
