| We had an axle scale for several years. Better than nothing but not as accurate as most think they are. Ours was one from Central City Scale, not saying anything against them just stating the fact of what it was. Metal frame with the scale in it, set it between concrete bumpers so we had smooth on and off.
Weighing a semi it would weight as much as 1500 lbs different if you weighed the axles as you pulled across the scale vs if you pulled across and then weighed as you backed up across the scale. Everything was flat and smooth on the approach front and back. Never did figure out why it did what it did. We always made sure that we pulled across the same way when we weighed the empty as when we weighed the loaded so at least we hoped we were taking some of that variability out of it.
We now have a full size scale here at the farm. As a poster said you have to have it certified to be legal. We have a scale company come out and certify ours before harvest each year. The state does random checks but does not have to certify it every year. We've been here for 16 years now and the state has been by either 2 or 3 times.
It was not cheap to put in but I think it was worth the money. We know we are not cheating ourselves or our landlords either way. Every load gets weighed in and out. It is a selling point to promote to landlords. | |
