Subject: Electric pivot safety?

Northeast Louisiana
We've had a lot of lightning the past few days and I was thinking of the tragedy last year when the girls got electrocuted by a pivot. Is there any way to make sure a pivot isn't hot when you go to it? On the diesel powered ones I've always been told to slap the box with the back of your hand but I would think that would be deadly on an electric powered one if something shorted out in the transformer or control box.
