You might not be exaggerating as much as you think.  This link says that Alaska produced 99,000 bushels of barley, and has 15 million acres of soil is for farming.  Not sure if that means the soil is good, but climate isn't, or it is suitable right now with current weather.  The next frontier anyone?  I don't know the accuracy of the info.
