Subject: Corn Kernel Size

Hazelton, Kansas
All,

I just shelled and weighed an ear to get a yield estimate. The ear was dropped, and I pulled it off, shucked it and air dried it for two days in a ~130 F circulating dryer (actually, I laid it in the sun on a concrete shed apron).

Ok...the ear was 18x ~36, and well pollinated, so I'm estimating 650 kernels per ear. Kernel weight was 0.24 lbs for the ear.

That figures to roughly 150,000 kernels/bushel.

This corn got pollinated before things got rough, but hit the wall about 10 days ago, and shut down during kernel fill.

So, the usual 90k number may be a good "average" number, but be advised that your mileage may vary...a lot.

Regards.

MDS
