Have hackberry trees that grow wild here in eastern kansas in our Hedge rows {osage orange tree]. They are showing signs like you described. They are tougher than a boot. Never known one to die on there own. Have you ever tried to doze one out of a tree row? They have a root that can make a dozer cry. I wouldn't be the least bit worried about them being to dry. If they can take kansas weather they have it made in Iowa!
