You don't say what kind of grass it is.  However, I think I would want the grass dead before trying to seed alfalfa in the stand.  I would let that grass grow back out a bit, enough so that you have adequate leaf surface area to absorb the Roundup. How long that will take?  Depends on what kind of moisture you have (and the type of grass) .
