If you use a self exciting "one wire" regulator in the alternator, the alternator self excites and senses voltage internally, so no external sense wire is needed. I suspect you need a battery, even a small lawn tractor size, to float between the alternator and inverter. Automotive alternator regulator systems can go nuts if they do not see a stable 12V battery inline.
