Subject: Downy ball

northwest Indiana
We bought a new top-loading washer a few months ago and it is one of the newer type that doesn't have a center agitator or fabric softener container in it. It came with a "Downy Ball" that you put the softener in and toss in with the clothes. It works sometimes, but is aggravating to fill and sometimes leaves a noticeable residue on the clothes. Does anyone have a good experience with these? My wife has thought about throwing it out and going back to the dryer sheets. I did an online search and found others that have done exactly that. Why can't they make it easier rather than harder with each product upgrade?
